I'm still here, but my livejournal has been forgotten. For now I'm calling this my last entry, as I'm planning to setup a blog for all things jess-like. These days it includes knitting, music, vegetarian recipes & photos. Farewell, livejournalers!

It's been a while... [Sep. 27th, 2007|08:21 am]
[Current Music |tegan & sara - the con]

With Facebook taking over like wildfire this page has been neglected for almost 2 months! What have I been doing?! Well... I got a bit older on August 21st, as did Steve, and this was my attempt at the best wrapped present ever:

steve's birthday present

Also, I quit my real estate advertising job and will be starting at a media production house in 2 weeks, mostly admin type stuff but it's a more creative company which is great, and closer to home.

My hair is now shoulder length, and dark dark brown! But I haven't done the whole "take 50 photos of it until I find the right one" yet so you'll just have to wait. Ha.

New York is still 3 months away, but I need all that time to keep saving! The NBA and RATM tickets have set me back this week... *whoops*

That's about it. I'll update again when I have more news :)

It's a bit cheesy [Apr. 10th, 2007|04:27 pm]
[Current Mood | curious]
[Current Music |kings of leon - on call]

I keep making discoveries about things I've eaten all my life... here's another one about an ingredient in most cheeses called "Rennet"

RENNET ~ An enzyme taken from the stomach of killed calves and used in the cheese making process as a coagulation agent. There are many non-animal rennet cheeses available - ask at your local health food shop. These cheeses use microbial or fungal enzymes instead.

More things you may not want to know (but should) are on this Animal Products List

No more killer pythons... [Mar. 15th, 2007|12:07 pm]
[Current Location |At work...]
[Current Mood | tired]

I'm finding out more and more about the things I've been eating, some of which I was quite happy being oblivious to. Such as jelly lollies containing gelatin. Here's what I found on Wikipedia.

"Gelatin (also gelatine, from French gélatine) is a translucent brittle solid substance, colorless or slightly yellow, nearly tasteless and odorless, which is created by prolonged boiling of connective tissue such as skin, cartilage, and bones obtained from the animal processing industry. It has been commonly used in food, pharmaceutical, photography, and cosmetic manufacturing. Substances containing gelatin or functioning in a similar way are called gelatinous. Gelatin is an irreversibly hydrolyzed form of collagen. Gelatin is also known as E number E441."

Don't read this if you don't want to know more. )

The new vegetarian [Feb. 22nd, 2007|03:33 pm]
[Current Mood | inspired]
[Current Music |the shins - australia]

Last night Steve brought up the idea of becoming vegetarian, inspired in part by a moral discussion with his Dad. Here is what came out of it, and why I'm going to try never to eat meat (or chicken, or fish) again:

~ We know that killing people is wrong, but our society places animal life below our own, and therefore it is blindly accepted that it is okay to kill them (even breed to kill them) for our consumption.

~ Although I don't have scientific research to back it up, I believe that the energy, water and other resources used to produce meat (particularly red meat) should be a huge incentive to avoid it, considering the state of the earth at the moment.

~ If they put photos of where chickens have come from on their packaging in the supermarket, I guarantee you wouldn't buy it. I'm still going to eat eggs, but spend the extra couple of dollars for free range.

~ Fish is a tough one, because it's supposed to be so damn good for you and tastes delicious. I read an article the other day about endangered fish being marketed as a different type so people will buy it. I'm also doubtful about the conditions they keep them in before shipping to our shops. It can't be good.

~ If we were truly living by the food chain, we should physically catch and cook any animal we want to eat, else we don't really deserve it.

~ Forgetting the ethics, I don't think it's healthy to eat meat every day as many people do. Maybe only having it once or twice a week probably helps :)

These are only my first thoughts, and it's totally open to discussion. Actually I really want to hear what everyone else has to say...

Big Day Out [Jan. 30th, 2007|06:27 pm]
Work is keeping me busy, and I don't have the internet in my new apartment yet, but I've found the time to give my Big Day Out rundown, here it goes...

Shooting at Unarmed Men ~ a local band, a bit chaotic but still good tunes

The Vines ~ boring as f*ck, although only stuck around for 2 songs, maybe they got better...?

Lily Allen ~ not a fan of her music, but it was an entertaining set to watch

Peaches ~ is crazy.

The Killers ~ biggest disappointment of the day. I was really looking forward to seeing them, but alas I couldn't see (or hear) a thing. I think the organisers sold WAY too many tickets this year.

Lupe Fiasco ~ Freakin awesome! Top act of the day.

Tool ~ an amazing band, their own show will probably be better but I was glad they played songs I knew!

It was a pretty fun day, apart from the sunburn and pushy crowd, but next year they'll need a damn good lineup to get me back (apparently it's moving to Flemington Racecourse).
